Parable Of A Fig Tree
The fig tree was planted in the devil’s strip, the area between the sidewalk and the street, the place where things are placed when they are free for the taking. The rocky, dry soil, and the occasional watering was all the nurture it wanted. The heat came on fast this summer, over a hundred for a week. The little green balls on my fig grew quickly into big, soft, sweet, fruit. They call this the first blush, a prediction of a fruitful year to come.

When you call me a “vessel”, I become full and then empty, but mostly I sit expectantly. I am waiting for the elixir of life to pour in and animate me in ways previously unimaginable. This frightens me. Like a marionette, I once felt a yearning to be “real”, but I was wholly wooden through and through, and strings held up by the Cosmos moved me.

Leggo My Eggos

Leggo My Eggos
I am always questioning my children's assumption that all the Leggo people in their sets are male. I ask them why and they very earnestly explain to me about the hair and the face and stuff. I have always chalked it up to being about self-identity and identifying with the toys. Today, they mentioned that there is a whole set of Leggos called Leggo Friends and that they are girls. I asked if there are battles in the land of Leggo Friends. They said no. My littlest explains that the sets they play with are about a long time ago when things weren't right. That it was when girls couldn't do things that boys could do. Now we know how to do it better. They said there are future Leggo sets that are not like that. Leggo cities, and etc. He said the future is what we think not what is. We also decided that girls in Leggo Friends also have battles only it isn't physical. Hmmm.

One For Each Kid

One For Each Kid
This is the sandbox at a local park in NE Portland. It draws the well-to-do crowd. I was surprised one day when the number of vehicles had grown to 20. When children would fight over a plastic truck, parents would say, "Don't worry, Junior, there are plenty more to choose from." My efforts to promote sharing were reduced to rubble. There was more fighting at this sandpit this summer than at any other playground we attended this year.
